MINSK, Belarus - The Belarusian military says one of its fighter jets has crashed, killing both crew members.
Defence Ministry said in a statement that the MiG-29 went down Thursday near the western town of Baranovichi. It said the crew was practicing low-altitude manoeuvrs on a regular training mission.
The ministry said a military commission has begun an investigation into the cause of the crash.
The twin-engine MiG-29 was commissioned by the Soviet Air Force in the 1980s and has remained in service in Russia, other ex-Soviet nations and many other countries worldwide.
MOSCOW, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) — Two pilots were killed when a MiG-29 fighter jet crashed in Belarus on Thursday, a Belarusian Defense Ministry spokesman said.
"A MiG-29 plane crashed near Baranovichi in the Brest Region. Both pilots were killed," the spokesman Vyacheslav Remenchik was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying.
The plane came down when the crew was performing highly complex aerobatic maneuvers at low altitudes, he said.
"To prevent the plane from falling on populated areas, the crew steered it away toward a boggy forested area," Remenchik said.
Military experts were investigating the air accident.
